Bouldering for children: pushing boundaries and having fun!

At Walden we want to provide a balanced environment where climbers can boulder in peace and where children can also discover this adventurous sport. This requires clear agreements and expectations.

Walden primarily focuses on adult and experienced young climbers who want to exercise in peace. Children are welcome, but only if parents continuously supervise them and maintain a calm atmosphere. This means climbing together as a group and ensuring they follow the house rules. Children in a climbing hall bring a delicate balance: adult climbers want to exercise with focus, children are energetic and due to their young age often have too little awareness of potential danger.

We don’t have special children’s routes and there is no separate children’s zone. Nevertheless, Walden offers children the opportunity to explore boundaries in an adventurous way and build self-confidence. Under the watchful eye of a parent, they take their first steps on the climbing wall.

House rules for children

A climbing hall is not an indoor playground. To ensure a pleasant and calm atmosphere and prevent accidents, the following rules apply:

Supervision and safety

We advise against coming with children younger than 7 years old. Children under 12 years old may only climb under supervision of an adult, preferably someone with experience. The guideline is: one adult per two children. The adult is always responsible for the children in their company. From age 12, children may climb independently.

For die-hard young climbers who have climbed at Walden very often, who have lots of experience and their own climbing shoes, the minimum age of 12 to climb alone is negotiable.

No large groups of children

To ensure peace and safety in the hall, we don’t welcome large groups of children. Therefore, we don’t offer the possibility to organise children’s parties. Our focus is on a personal and relaxed experience for everyone.

Climbing shoes and hygiene

Climbing barefoot or in shoes you’ve worn outside is not allowed. Climbing shoes are mandatory. You can rent them at Walden.

Alternative for younger playful kids

Children who don’t want to climb can visit Pretland, an indoor playground one floor up. Adult supervision is also required there.

Youth programme

Young people are welcome in our climbing club where they can further explore the climbing sport in a fun and safe way.

At Walden we strive for a safe, relaxed and inclusive climbing experience for everyone. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!

Before your visit, please read our general house rules.
